Humane Society of Boulder Valley

The Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) seeks a strategic, relationship-driven Director of Philanthropy to design and lead the organization’s fundraising strategies and philanthropic engagement in support of the organization’s long-term financial sustainability and mission impact. This senior leadership role sets the vision for a comprehensive fundraising program and oversees a high-performing team responsible for philanthropy, communications and marketing, community relations, annual giving, grants, and events.

As a member of HSBV’s executive leadership team, the Director of Philanthropy partners closely with the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors to advance HSBV’s mission, strengthen donor relationship, and ensure philanthropic strategies align with organizational priorities. Summary Of Responsibilities

Philanthropy Leadership and Strategy

  • Sets the vision for HSBV’s organizational fundraising strategy, ensuring alignment with mission and long-term goals.
  • Designs and oversees annual and multi-year fundraising and donor-retention strategies.
  • Develops and maintains an individual portfolio of major donor relationships and personally leads major gift cultivation and solicitation efforts.
  • Oversees donor recognition and stewardship strategies to strengthen long-term engagement.
  • Cultivates donor networks and builds a sustainable pipeline of philanthropic support.
  • Serves as the primary staff liaison to the Board on philanthropy strategy and performance.
  • Represents HSBV externally through professional affiliations, community engagement, and relationship-building activities.

Budget, Fiscal Accountability, and Departmental Leadership

  • Develops and manages philanthropy and community outreach budgets.
  • Forecasts revenue and evaluates return on investment, ensures achievement of strategic initiatives and annual action plans.
  • Responsible for departmental achievement of strategic initiatives and annual action plans.
  • Oversee philanthropy-related activities including fundraising campaigns, events, grants, sponsorships, board engagement, brand-aligned communications, board engagement, and data analysis.
  • Lead and mentor a multi-functional philanthropy and communications team.
  • Effectively allocates resources – both financial and human – to maximize organizational impact and return on investment.

Qualifications

Required

  • Demonstrated success in leading complex fundraising programs and managing senior-level staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in non-profit management or related field.
  • Proven experience in fundraising, philanthropy, and direct solicitation.
  • 3-5 years of management experience.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation experience.
  • Proficiency in a Windows-based computing environment. Experience with Microsoft Office 365 preferred.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License with an insurable driving record.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for events and organizational priorities.
  • Background screening and drug testing required candidates not currently employed by HSBV.

Desired

  • Successful experience securing major and planned gifts and planned gifts in a non-profit environment.
  • Experience using Salesforce or comparable donor management systems.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently with discipline and accountability.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Demonstrated passion for animal welfare and humane treatment of animals.

Work Environment and Schedule

Work is primarily performed in a private office, with regular use of a computer and telephone. The role includes frequent walking, standing, bending, and stooping with occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds with assistance. Some exposure to animals is expected, including potential risks related to animal handling and cleaning agents. Periodic driving on behalf of HSBV is required.

The regular schedule is Monday through Friday during business hours with occasional evening and weekend commitments for events, meetings, training, or media engagement. Schedule flexibility is available.

What We Offer - The anticipated salary range for this position is $90,000 – $115,000 earned annually. This pay range is the Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s best estimate for this role and actual compensation will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, additional training/certifications for preferred skills, and education.
